Render November – 30 Days of Animation
Render November is a challenge to render out an animation every day for the month of November. I started dabbling in After Effect, an Adobe application, a couple of years ago. In 2017 I completed an Animation Bootcamp course through the School of Motion and wanted to put my new skills to the test!
2017 Prompt List for Render November
The most challenging part of Render November was creating something EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. As someone that isn’t great at illustration, it was tough to not just think of something I wanted to make, but do the art and animate it. As a result I didn’t love everything I made, but I learned something every day.
Here are a few of my favorite pieces from Render November!
Day 4 : Skyscraper
I actually started with the end result of this render with the buildings and light bulbs underneath. Originally I thought I could just turn the lights on and off but then decided to take it to the next level with starting micro with the blocks that will ultimately be windows, then going macro with the whole canvas.
Initially I wasn’t unhappy with this render, after the 30 days though I can see a bunch of flaws that drive me nuts. BUT I’m happy about that since I’ll know how to improve for my next project.

Day 11 : Sunrise + Sunset
I’m not great at illustration and creating whole canvases of artwork. I started down the road of creating a sunrise and sunset but it just didn’t look right. So I went in a totally different direction, going really minimalist with the art.

Day 18 : How a Rain Drop Feels About Rain
Character animation is something I haven’t dabbled in much, but now I would like to! For this prompt I decided I wanted to tell a short story.

Day 24 : Happy
For this prompt I interpreted ‘happy’ using all the neurochemicals that simulate the feeling of happiness. I experimented a lot with Particles which you can see in the background falling during Serotonin or swirling around during Adrenaline.

Day 29 : Constellation
I challenged myself to work with depth of field and movement outside of the visual canvas. It’s easy for me to animate within a box, but to make it feel like the frame is actually moving took me a lot more time and patience.

Day 30 : Artist’s Choice
“Zero ‘fox’ Given”, inspired by a mug I made which got some great reactions! The letters are my own handwriting and I experimented with adding a construction paper texture to the pieces. The step-n-repeat background and shadows were created using a Camera and a couple different light sources.

Several of these went into my Spring 2018 reel, check it out here!
